In his speech, the FSM President Panuelo showed his heartfelt thanks to the Chinese people for their generous aid in making such rapid progress in the National Convention Center Project, from the signing of the memorandum to the commencement ceremony within less than 12 months. He also thanked the Guangdong Provincial Government and CSCEC for their hard work.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the FSM. The National Convention Center in the FSM is an important action taken under the “Belt and Road” initiative. Built by the Guangdong Provincial Government, the project is located in Palikir, Pohnpei, the FSM. It covers an area of 18,000 square meters, including a main functional area of about 3,050 square meters that accommodates conferences, exhibitions, offices and parking lots. Once completed, it will be a major venue for local, regional and even international conferences and forums.
The architectural design of the project fully considers the geological proximity to the adjacent government building complex, respects the existing terrain, and features buildings with pitched roofs and courtyards that adapt to local climate characteristics. To achieve cultural integration and harmony between the two countries, this is also fused with Chinese cultural elements such as fret lattice windows and Lingnan gardens, as well as Micronesian cultural elements such as black basalt and island patterns. The interior design shows a concise and modern style in comfortable and pleasant meeting spaces.
The project was started on October 18, 2019, and the planned construction period is 12 months. It will be delivered to the FSM Government by the end of 2020. During the construction process, more local technicians and labor workers will be employed to increase local employment opportunities. A group of outstanding construction technicians will be trained to promote the development of construction technology in the FSM.
